Yoga for a Healthier Heart

Heart health is important for us all! Heart disease includes the classic heart attack and also takes the form of conditions such as high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, atrial fibrillation and venous insufficiency. The body and mind can gradually die away, often with a significant amount of associated pain and disability. What’s even more surprising is that a significant number of people don’t realize that they have a “heart problem.”
The costs to people with cardiovascular disease and their families, and society as a whole, are huge.
This therapeutic yoga session is founded primarily on the work of Nischala Joy Devi of Dr. Dean Ornish’s program and Dr. Karandikar, a physician from Pune, India who has been formative in the work of my teacher, David McAmmond.

It employs blankets and bolsters to maintain the body in a number of positions that are known to be supportive of the physiology of the circulatory system, the heart, and the nervous system.  Comprised primarily of supported backbends of the upper body and mild inversions, this body of restorative yoga poses complements conventional medicine, aiming to reduce the need for invasive procedures to treat heart conditions and acting as a supportive practice for those who have undergone such treatments. Also suitable for anyone wishing to effectively manage their reaction to stress.

Suitable for all levels. Dress comfortably in modest clothing in which you can more comfortably on the floor. If you have a bolster, please bring it with you.
